Mandi Gobindgarh in eight lines

Fatehgarh Sahib district was formed on Baisakhi Day, 13 April 1992, and is named after Sahibzada Fateh Singh, the youngest son of Guru Gobind Singh; it lies 50 km west of Chandigarh, and its language is Punjabi.[1]
Mandi Gobindgarh is a sub-tehsil and one of the district's main towns, with Sirhind, Bassi Pathana, Amloh and Khamano.[3],[2]
The district calls it the Steel Town of India, with a good number of steel rolling mills, and lists units making sewing machine parts, centrifugal pumps, bus and truck bodies and mining machinery.[2]
Invest India's ODOP list names forged items, and machine parts and rolling-mill machinery, for Fatehgarh Sahib.[4]
By local tradition the town takes its name from Guru Hargobind's stay by the lake of Barhi Dhab in 1646; the Maharaja of Nabha ordered industrial units built there in 1902, and in 1928 it became a free trade zone for steel.[6]
Land given to blacksmiths in the early 1940s filled the G.T. Road with workshops; rolling mills, induction furnaces, forging units, foundries and scrap-cutting units now make up the town's economy, and it is nicknamed Loha Mandi.[6]
Desh Bhagat University, set up under Punjab's Desh Bhagat University Act, stands off NH-44 on Amloh Road, Mandi Gobindgarh 147301; RIMT University is also in the town.[5],[6]
Sirhind, in the same district, is a railway junction, and the nearest airport is Chandigarh, 50 km from the district headquarters.[2]
