Arani in eight lines
From the Commissionerate of Municipal Administration, the Tiruvannamalai district administration and Invest India's ODOP list; the jagir, the river, the trades and the transport office are general background from Wikipedia.
Arani was constituted a municipality in 1951 and has been a First Grade municipality since 9 May 1983, in the Vellore region of municipal administration.[1]
Arni is one of Tiruvannamalai district's three revenue divisions, with Tiruvannamalai and Cheyyar, and one of its twelve taluks; the district lists Tamil and English as its languages.[2]
Tiruvannamalai district was formed from North Arcot on 30 September 1989 as Tiruvannamalai Sambuvarayar district, with Arni among its first six taluks, and renamed in 1997.[3]
The district's history records a war at Arni in 1696, after the Mughal–Maratha war at Desur, and a later battle at Arni fought by Robert Clive.[3]
The Jagir of Arani was granted to Vedaji Bhaskar Pant in 1640 and stayed with his descendants until the Zamindari Abolition Act of 1948; the old fort now houses government offices.[5]
The town stands on the Kamandala Naga; rice milling, which produces the rice called Arni Ponni, and silk weaving, mostly on handlooms with some powerlooms, are its main trades.[5]
Arani is the headquarters of the TN 97 regional transport office and has a University College of Engineering; Telugu, Urdu and Kannada are spoken beside Tamil.[5]
