Gudiyatham was constituted a third grade municipality in 1886 and upgraded under 1973 orders. It has 36 wards over a local planning area of 4.92 sq km, taking in parts of Pitchanur, Sethukkarai, Thalaiyatham, Kondasamudram, Nellurepettai and Seruvangi villages.[1]
The 2011 census counted 91,558 people in 21,363 households. The municipal office stands opposite the old bus stand on R.S. Road, PIN 632 602.[1]
Vellore, the district headquarters, is linked by rail and bus to the neighbouring states, and its fort is described by the district as one of the most perfect specimens of military architecture in South India.[2]

A 1075 CE inscription points to Chola-era settlement. The seasonal Gowndanya Mahanadhi, a Palar tributary, flows through the town, which lies close to the Andhra Pradesh border on the Katpadi–Jolarpettai line and NH 75.[5]
Handloom weaving has long been the town's main occupation, with handloom and powerloom lungis, safety matches and beedis among its products; a cloth store opened in 1850 helped build the handloom trade.[5]
