Kanchipuram, the temple town, is the headquarters of Kancheepuram district on the northern east coast of Tamil Nadu, adjoining Chennai; the district covers 1,704.79 sq km in 5 taluks and 5 blocks, with one municipal corporation.[1]
Kanchi was the capital of the Pallavas from the 3rd to the 9th century; the Chinese traveller Yuan Chwang visited in the 7th century, and the Cholas and the Vijayanagara kings ruled it later.[2]
The present district dates from 1 July 1997, when Chengalpattu-MGR district was split into Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur.[2]
Kancheevaram silks and sarees have been recognised as a Geographical Indication since 2005-06; they are woven in pure mulberry silk with zari, and the body and border are woven separately and then interlocked.[3]
Traditional borders carry motifs such as Rudraksham, Gopuram, Mayilkan and Kuyilkan; the first weavers' cooperative, the Kamatchi Amman Society, was formed in 1949 with 79 weavers.[3]
Invest India's One District One Product list names textile garments and silk for Kancheepuram.[4]
Tamil Nadu ranks first among states by number of factories and industrial workers, and produced 33.64% of India's textile exports in FY26.[5]
