Palnadu district was formed on 4 April 2022 by bifurcating Guntur district; its headquarters is Narasaraopet, and it has 3 revenue divisions and 28 mandals.[1]
The district names Telugu and Urdu as its major languages, and cotton, chillies, tobacco, paddy and pulses as its major crops, irrigated from the Krishna, the Prakasam Barrage and Nagarjuna Sagar.[1]
Vinukonda is the headquarters of its mandal, under the Narasaraopet revenue division, and a second-grade municipality; it was formerly known as Vishnukundinapuram.[3]
Its hill, said to be shaped like a tortoise, carries temples on its top, including the Srigangasametha Ramalingeswara Swamy temple, and was the site of a fortress in the medieval era.[3]
The Jamia Masjid in the town was built in 1640.[3]
The town is on the Guntur–Kurnool–Bellary highway, and Vinukonda station is on the Guntur–Guntakal line in South Central Railway's Guntur division.[3]
