A Markapur slate workshop has loaded a dealer's order and wants to send the dispatch note on WhatsApp. Before it reaches the dealer's phone, the note passes through five checks, each of which decides something about it.

Markapur and its new district in nine lines

Markapuram district was formed by gazette from the western parts of Prakasam district, to address their backwardness, with Markapuram as its headquarters.[3],[2]
On 31 December 2025 the in-charge Collector and Superintendent of Police took charge in the newly formed district.[1]
The district has two revenue divisions, Kanigiri with 6 mandals and Markapur with 15; three municipalities, Markapur, Kanigiri and Giddalur; the nagar panchayat of Podili; and 406 gram panchayats.[2]
It covers 10,035 sq km; forest land, 42.84% of the district, includes the Nallamala forest, which spreads across several of its mandals.[2]
The Gundlakamma rises near Gundla Brahmeswaram in the Nallamala and passes through the Cumbum gorge; the Nagarjuna Sagar project, the Cumbum tank, the Mopadu reservoir and 546 minor tanks water the district's fields.[2]
Its places of interest include the Sri Chennakesava Swamy temple in Markapur, the Tripuranthakeswara and Bala Tripurasundari temples at Tripuranthakam, and Bhairavakona in the heart of the Nallamala, where a waterfall falls 200 metres.[2],[4]
Markapur is known for slate manufacturing, and exported slate to other countries in the late 1980s; it is often a transit stop for pilgrims bound for Srisailam.[5]
The Chennakesava temple was first built by Marika and enlarged during Krishnadevaraya's rule; the Vijayawada–Guntakal line runs through the town's station.[5]
Invest India's ODOP list (V33, 31 December 2025) has no row for the new district yet; it lists Black Galaxy granite and Ethamukkala check lungis for Prakasam.[6]
