Suri in eight lines
From the Birbhum district administration and Invest India's ODOP list; the river, the barrage, the station, the colleges and the trades are general background from Wikipedia.
Birbhum was constituted as a district in 1787, together with Vishnupur, which went to the Burdwan Collectorate in 1793; it was reconstituted as a separate district in 1820.[2]
When the collectorship was abolished in 1809 and the district run from Murshidabad, an Assistant Collector remained in charge at Suri; Suri heads the district's 1872 list of thanas.[2]
Today the district's offices in the town include the Suri Agri-Mechanical division, the Suri District Correctional Home and the Suri-I development block.[1]
Suri stands on the Mayurakshi near the centre of the district, with the Tilpara barrage just upstream and the Bakreshwar temple and power station nearby; its municipality dates from 1876.[4]
Siuri station is on the Andal–Sainthia branch line, where the first train arrived in 1913, and the town is on the Panagarh–Morgram highway.[4]
The town is known for its murabba, a preserved sweet, and its chief industries are rice milling, cotton and silk weaving and furniture making.[4]
Suri Vidyasagar College, Birbhum Mahavidyalaya and the Birbhum Institute of Engineering and Technology teach in the town; Bengali, Hindi and English are its main languages.[4]
Invest India's ODOP list names Santiniketan leather goods and kantha for Birbhum.[3]
