Paschim Bardhaman was formed on 7 April 2017 from the old Bardhaman district, as West Bengal's 23rd district, with its headquarters at Asansol and two subdivisions, Asansol Sadar and Durgapur.[1]
The district lists 1,603 sq km, 2,882,031 people, 8 blocks and 2 municipal corporations, and describes itself as predominantly urban and mining-industrial, with Bengali and Hindi as its languages.[1]
Under a notification of 3 June 2015, the municipal areas of Kulti, Raniganj and Jamuria came under the Asansol Municipal Corporation.[4]
Jamuria lies in the heart of the coal-mining zone, with Eastern Coalfields' Kenda, Kunustoria, Satgram and Sripur area offices around it, and small iron and cement units in the area.[4]
The Andal–Sainthia branch line passes Jamuria between Ikra and Barabani, NH 19 runs nearby, and buses link it to Raniganj, Asansol, Haripur and Kolkata.[4]
Invest India's ODOP list names refractory bricks and similar refractory ceramics as Paschim Bardhaman's product.[3]
IBEF lists iron and steel and mineral resources among West Bengal's key industries.[2]
