From Ethora to Sanctoria
In 1774 two officers of the East India Company, John Sumner and Suetonius Grant Heatly, found coal near Ethora in what is now Salanpur, and the field that took Raniganj's name became the place where India's coal mining is said to have begun. Regular mining followed from 1820, Dwarkanath Tagore bought collieries in 1835, and in 1843 Carr, Tagore and Company joined another firm to form the Bengal Coal Company, with its headquarters at Sanctoria.
The field was nationalised in 1973, and Eastern Coalfields Limited took over its collieries in 1975. Raniganj itself headed a subdivision until 1906, when it became the Asansol subdivision, and in 2015 its municipal area joined Kulti and Jamuria in the Asansol Municipal Corporation. A coalfield's trade has always been with buyers elsewhere, and that is the kind of trade WhatsApp suits.
