The Satpura Thermal Power Station at Sarni, run by MP Power Generating Company, is in Betul district, 18 km from Ghoradongri railway station.[1]
MPPGCL lists the station at 1,330 MW; its two newest units, of 250 MW each, were commissioned in August 2013 and March 2014, and four older units were decommissioned on 30 September 2024.[1]
MPPGCL has received environmental clearance for a 660 MW supercritical unit at Sarni.[2]
The station's coal comes from Western Coalfields, whose listed areas include Pathakheda, Kanhan, Pench, Nagpur, Chandrapur and Wani, and its water from the Tawa dam.[1]
Sarni and its neighbours grew as project towns in the 1960s for the power station and the Pathakhera coal mines; the municipal council covers Sarni, Pathakhera, Shobhapur Colony and Bagdona.[4]
The Tawa runs through the town in the Satpura hills; a Shiva temple on Mathardev peak overlooks it, and the Mathardev fair is held each January at Makar Sankranti.[4]
