Betul is a southern district of Madhya Pradesh lying almost wholly on the Satpura plateau, the southernmost part of the Bhopal division.[1]
The district names itself as the origin of the Tapti; its neighbours are Narmadapuram to the north, Amravati in Maharashtra to the south, Chhindwara to the east and Khandwa to the west.[2]
It takes its name from Betul Bazar, the headquarters under the Marathas and early British rule; in 1822 the headquarters moved about 5 km north to Badnur, which now carries the name Betul.[3]
The district counts 10,043 sq km and 15,75,247 people at the 2011 census, and lists Hindi and Marathi as its languages.[1]
Much of the Tawa valley is covered with valuable trees, teak among them, and Invest India's One District One Product list names teak for Betul.[2],[6]
Maize is grown across the district, paddy is a major kharif crop and wheat is sown in almost every block.[4]
Khamla, in Bhainsdehi tehsil, stands at 1,137 m, and the district's portal features Muktagiri, the Tapti Mahotsav and the Satpura thermal power plant.[2],[1]
Betul station (BZU) is on the Itarsi–Betul–Nagpur line; by road the town is 178 km from Bhopal and 173 km from Nagpur, whose airport, 180 km away, is the nearest.[5]
