Seoni district was formed in 1956 and is named after its headquarters town, whose name is said to come from the seona tree, common here, whose wood is used to make the dholak.[2]

It lies on a narrow north–south section of the Satpura plateau, crossed from north to south by the old National Highway 7, Banaras to Kanyakumari.[2],[1]
