Rajapalayam is the headquarters of Rajapalayam taluk in Virudhunagar district, about 85 km south-west of Madurai; the municipality covers 11.36 sq km.[1],[2]
It was constituted a Grade III municipality on 1 October 1941 and rose through the grades to special grade in 2008.[2]
The urban local bodies portal calls it an important trade centre for the villages around it, because it lies on NH208, the road from Quilon in Kerala to Tirumangalam near Madurai.[2]
Virudhunagar district was carved out of Ramanathapuram in 1985. It covers 4,241 sq km in ten taluks, from Rajapalayam and Srivilliputtur to Sivakasi and Sattur, and borders Kerala to the west.[3],[4]
The district administration styles Virudhunagar the district of crackers and matches, and Invest India's ODOP list names gauze cloth and Sivakasi crackers as its products.[3],[6]
Ayyanar Falls lies about 14 km west of Rajapalayam town.[5]
Tamil Nadu produced 33.64% of India's textile exports in FY26 and ranks first among states by number of factories.[7]
