Black-grape growers and traders
Black grapes grow across the valley, and growers and buyers settle rates and pickups by message.[5]

- Dispatch note with the lorry number
- Payment note for each lot
A business day in Cumbum
Cumbum sits in a valley under the Western Ghats, watered by the Mullai Periyar and a short drive from Kerala. Its grapes and cardamom are sold on both sides of the border, in two languages.
A grower asks a trader in town today's rate for black grapes.
A cardamom buyer gets lot photos in reply and asks for a sample.
A family asks a cab about the drive to Thekkady, about 30 km away.
A lorry of grapes leaves; the dispatch note goes out in Malayalam.
For the black-grape, coconut and cardamom traders of the Cumbum valley, the cabs that run to Thekkady and Suruli Falls, and the made-up and banana businesses behind Theni's ODOP list: how one grape order moves from a grower to a buyer across the Kerala border, which messages need a template, and what each costs.
See it work
A grower offers crates of black grapes to a Cumbum trader, and a buyer in Kerala orders them. Step through who sends what, and which step needs a template.
Five of the seven steps are conversations someone else started, so they cost the service rate and need no approval. The one template is the dispatch note, which goes out at night when the lorry leaves and the buyer has stopped writing.
The trader keeps one template name with a Tamil and a Malayalam version, so the same dispatch note reaches a Madurai buyer in Tamil and a Kochi buyer in Malayalam.

From the Commissionerate of Municipal Administration, the Theni district administration and Invest India's ODOP list; the valley's crops, water and history are general background from Wikipedia.
Cumbum became a Third Grade municipality from 1 October 1958, Second Grade in 1975 and First Grade in 1998; it has 33 wards, and the municipal office is on Sukkangalpatti Road.[1]
Theni district was formed by splitting the erstwhile Madurai district; a revenue division with its headquarters at Uthamapalayam, and new taluks at Theni and Bodinaickanur, were created from 1 January 1997.[2]
The district names Suruli falls in Uthamapalayam taluk among its main attractions, and the Kannagi temple on the interstate border holds a single day's festivity on Chitra Pournami.[2]
A memorial to Colonel John Pennycuick stands at Lower Camp, 8 km from Gudalur.[3]
The Mullai Periyar, diverted from Kerala, is the town's main source of drinking and irrigation water; landowners in Cumbum and Gudalur helped fund and staff the dam, completed in 1895.[5]
Paddy, coconut, black grapes and groundnut grow in the valley, and the town is known for its coconut, black-grape and cardamom trading.[5]
Suruli Falls is about 10 km away and Thekkady about 30 km, near the border town of Kumily; Madurai airport is about 115 km by road and Cochin International about 175 km, and Cumbum has no railway of its own.[5]
The town grew around the Kambaraya Perumal temple, from which it takes its name.[5]
Invest India's ODOP list names textile made-ups and banana for Theni district.[4]
Four businesses that follow from the valley's crops, the border road and the district's ODOP list.
Black grapes grow across the valley, and growers and buyers settle rates and pickups by message.[5]
The town is known for coconut and cardamom trading, with buyers in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.[5]
Thekkady is about 30 km away and Suruli Falls about 10 km, and the nearest airports are Madurai and Kochi.[5]
Textile made-ups and banana are Theni district's two ODOP products.[4]
All three are Meta template languages, and each version is its own template under the same name.
Replies need no template, so staff answer in whatever language a buyer writes. InfiQ's own support works in English and Hindi.

Question: Grape buyers from Kerala write to our Cumbum trading firm in Malayalam. Can our dispatch template be in Malayalam too?
Answer: Yes. Malayalam (ml) is on Meta's template list. Keep one dispatch template with a Tamil (ta) and a Malayalam version under the same name; each is reviewed when you create it. It is a utility message at ₹0.19 for an order the buyer placed.
Question: Growers in the Cumbum valley ask our firm the black-grape rate before the office opens. Can a menu answer them?
Answer: Yes. An InfiQ Flows menu can answer the day's rate, the pickup time and the crate count automatically and pass larger lots to staff. Every answer to a grower who wrote is a reply at ₹0.145, with no template, in Tamil or any language.
Question: Families ask our Cumbum cab service about a day trip to Thekkady by Kumily. What does the pickup reminder cost?
Answer: A reminder for a trip the family booked is a utility template at ₹0.19 per delivered message, with the time, the driver's name and the vehicle number as variables. Their questions before booking are replies at ₹0.145.
Question: Our cardamom trading house in Cumbum sends a buyer several lot photos in one conversation. Is each photo charged?
Answer: Each delivered message is charged, and a photo is a message. Inside the 24 hours a buyer's question opens, each is a reply at ₹0.145. Sending one PDF of the lots, rather than many separate photos, keeps the count down.
Question: Pilgrims for the Kannagi temple's Chitra Pournami festival book our lodge near Cumbum. Can we tell last year's guests when rooms open?
Answer: Only the guests who agreed to hear offers. A rooms-open message is a marketing template at ₹0.94, in Tamil or Malayalam, sent to guests whose yes is on record. A booking confirmation for a guest who booked is utility at ₹0.19.
Question: Our Cumbum unit stitches textile made-ups, Theni's ODOP product, and bills buyers in Busy. Can payment reminders go out by themselves?
Answer: Yes. InfiQ's native Busy integration sends invoices and automatic payment reminders on WhatsApp, with no integration fee. Each reminder to a buyer's Indian number is a utility message at ₹0.19.
