Nagapattinam in seven lines

The district was carved out of the composite Thanjavur district on 18 October 1991; it lies on the Bay of Bengal, 326 km south of Chennai and 145 km from Tiruchirappalli.[1]
The district page says it contributes a higher share of the state's rice, grows groundnut, pulses, gingelly, sugarcane and cotton, and names fishing, dry fish and prawn farming as its second economy.[1]

The Basilica of Our Lady of Health at Velankanni, on the shore of the Bay of Bengal, draws pilgrims from all over the world and people of other faiths; it has its own railway station.[2]

Nagapattinam was a port of the Medieval Cholas, later settled by the Portuguese and the Dutch; the Nagore Dargah holds the 14-day Kanduri festival for Hajrath Shahul Hamid.[5]
The town is a base for the Sikkal Singaravelan temple and Kodikkarai, and Nagapattinam Junction links it to Thiruvarur, Nagore and Velankanni.[5]
