Mayiladuthurai became Tamil Nadu's 38th district on 28 December 2020, when Nagapattinam district was bifurcated into Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai.[1]
It covers 1,188.26 sq km in four taluks (Mayiladuthurai, Kuthalam, Tharangambadi and Sirkali), five blocks and 241 village panchayats.[1],[2]
Its municipalities are Mayiladuthurai and Sirkali; its town panchayats are Manalmedu, Vaitheeswarankoil, Kuthalam and Tharangambadi.[2]
Agriculture is a major part of the economy and contributes a higher share of the state's rice; groundnut, pulses, gingelly, sugarcane and cotton are also grown.[2]
Fishing, with dry-fish processing and prawn farming, is the district's second major economy, and inland fishing adds to it.[2]
The Danish fort at Tharangambadi was built in 1620 and houses an archaeological museum run by the state, open every day except Friday.[3]
Poompuhar, near the mouth of the Kaveri, was once the port city of Kaveri Poompattinam and for a time the capital of the early Chola kings.[4]
