Lakhisarai became a district on 3 July 1994; before that it was a subdivision of Munger district.[2]
It has 7 blocks, 3 municipalities and 76 panchayats, and is bounded by Munger to the east, Sheikhpura to the south, Begusarai to the west and Patna to the north.[1],[2]
The district describes three parts: the Kachhua, Kajra and Jaynagar hills; a flood-hit area of Pipariya and part of Barahiya that it calls the stock of food grains; and green, cultivable plains.[2]
The main and loop railway lines cross at Kiul Junction, and NH 80 passes through the district headquarters.[2]
In the Pala period the region was an administrative and religious centre, and for a time the Palas' capital; Buddhist literature calls it Anguttri.[3]
The district's history page says Hiuen Tsang recorded 10 Buddhist monasteries here with more than four hundred Buddhists, and places Pala-era Krimila at today's Kiul Basti.[3]
Ashok Dham is named after Ashok, the cowherd who found its Shivling; devotees gather in Sawan and at Shivaratri, and it is popular for mundan ceremonies.[4]
Lali Pahadi, Shringi Rishi Dham, Baskund Dam and the Lakhisarai Museum are among the places the district shows visitors.[1]
