Sheikhpura in eight lines

Sheikhpura became a subdivision on 14 April 1983 and a separate district on 31 July 1994, carved out of Munger; its headquarters lies on the north side of the Gaya–Kiul rail line.[2]
It borders Nalanda and Patna to the north, Nawada and Jamui to the south, Lakhisarai to the east, and Nalanda and Nawada to the west.[2]
The district has a rocky highland at its centre, surrounded by fertile alluvial land; mining of the smaller hillocks with crushers is a major source of employment.[2]
Most people depend on farming, and the low-lying north-east, the Tal area, becomes waterlogged in the rains; the Somi, Korihari, Tati, Kachchi and Rijown are its small seasonal rivers.[2]
Local belief places Hidimba on the hillocks east of the town, which is why the hill is called Girihinda; it carries a Shiva temple and lies 2 km from the station.[2],[3]
The Vishnudham temple at Samas, 5 km from Barbigha and 25 km from Biharsharif, holds a Vishnu idol unearthed in 1992; the Tapowan Sakti temple stands on Khariypar hill.[3],[2]
