The Jamalpur workshop was established on 8 February 1862.[1]
IRIMEE started in 1905 as a technical school attached to the workshop, began training Special Class Railway Apprentices as mechanical and electrical engineers in 1927, and became a centralised training institute in 1974.[1]
It runs induction courses for Group B officers (six weeks) and directly recruited junior engineers (four weeks), oversees the 78-week probation of IRSME officers and trains staff from railways abroad, including Bangladesh.[1]
The institute sits about 8 km from Munger, at the foot of the Rajmahal range, on the Patna–Bhagalpur rail route.[1]
Munger district covers 1,419.7 sq km in 3 subdivisions and 9 blocks; the 2011 Census counted 13,67,765 residents.[2],[3]
Mir Qasim made Munger his capital in 1762 and set up an arsenal there; Joseph Hooker later called the town the Birmingham of Bengal.[4]
