Jamkhandi is a city and taluk in Bagalkot district, near the Krishna river; Kannada is its official language.[1]
Jamkhandi State, a Maratha princely state founded in 1811 by Gopalrao Patwardhan, had its capital here; its rulers held the title Raja.[1]
The state took its name from the Jambukeshwar temple, and Kundgol in Dharwar district was a detached part of it until the merger of 19 February 1948.[1]
The Patwardhans' Ramatirtha palace is the town's main attraction, and Katti kere, a lake, has a garden with statues of village life.[1]

Jamkhandi Sugars' mill stands at Hirepadasalagi village, about 20 km from the town, in Jamkhandi taluk; the company was registered in 1993 and began operations in 2001.[2]
The company makes sugar, molasses, co-generated power and ethanol, and says it was formed with local farmers; the Chikkapadasalgi irrigation scheme brought the land that supplies its cane under cultivation.[2]
