What Is a WhatsApp Business Profile?

A WhatsApp Business Profile is the public identity card attached to your WhatsApp Business API number. It bundles the details a customer sees when they open a chat or tap your business name: your display name, profile photo or logo, business category, an about line, a longer description, physical address, email and website. On the WhatsApp Business Platform this profile is stored against your WhatsApp Business Account (WABA) and phone number, and it is the first thing that signals to a customer whether they are talking to a real, trustworthy business or a random number. Getting it complete and accurate is one of the cheapest, highest-impact trust levers you have before you send a single template.

Your Business Profile is the name, logo, category, description, address, email and website WhatsApp shows customers in the chat. It builds trust, supports the green tick review, and takes minutes to set up correctly through your BSP.

What a Business Profile actually contains

The Business Profile is a defined set of fields that live on your WhatsApp Business Account, separate from the messages you send. Each field has a purpose and its own character or format limits, and customers can view all of them from the business info screen inside the chat. Treat every field as prime real estate — an incomplete profile reads as a low-effort or fly-by-night operation, while a fully filled one reassures customers that they are dealing with a real company they can look up.

  • Display name — the business name customers see; it must match your real, legal or widely known brand name and follows Meta's display-name rules
  • Profile photo — usually your logo, shown as the chat avatar; a recognisable mark dramatically lifts open and reply rates
  • Category — a business vertical such as Retail, Education, Finance or Travel that sets customer expectations
  • About and description — a short tagline (roughly 139 characters) plus a longer paragraph explaining what you do and who you serve
  • Address — your physical location, useful for local and offline-linked businesses
  • Email and website — direct channels customers can use to verify you and reach you outside chat

Why it matters for Indian businesses on the API

On the WhatsApp Business API, you rarely have the person's prior context — many conversations begin with a template notification landing cold in someone's inbox. The Business Profile is what turns an unknown number into a recognised brand at the exact moment a customer decides whether to read, reply, or block. A complete profile with a proper logo, a clear description and a working website reduces the friction of that first impression, lowers block-and-report rates, and directly supports your quality rating, which in turn protects your messaging limits. It is also a prerequisite for a credible green tick (official business account) application — reviewers look at whether your profile presents a real, consistent business identity. In short, the profile does not cost you anything per message, but a weak one quietly taxes every campaign you run.

How the Business Profile works on the platform

Your profile is attached to a specific phone number inside your WhatsApp Business Account and is managed through your Business Solution Provider (BSP) rather than the consumer WhatsApp app. When you onboard with InfiQ, we set the profile fields via the WhatsApp Business Platform during activation, and you can update most of them later from the dashboard. Two distinctions trip people up. First, the display name is governed by Meta's display-name policy and is reviewed — you cannot freely rename it to a promotional slogan. Second, the profile is a separate concept from the green tick: the profile is the information itself, while the green tick (verified badge) is an additional business-verification status Meta may grant on top of a well-formed profile and a verified Meta Business Manager. A clean, honest, fully populated profile is the foundation both of everyday trust and of any later verification you pursue.

Business Profile vs display name vs green tick

These three terms get used interchangeably and shouldn't be. The Business Profile is the whole card of information. The display name is one field on that card, subject to its own naming rules and review. The green tick is a separate verified-badge status that Meta grants to eligible official business accounts and that a strong profile helps you qualify for. You can have a complete Business Profile without a green tick, and your profile must be sound before the green tick is even worth applying for. Keeping these straight helps you set the right expectation internally — filling in your profile is a same-day task; earning a verified badge is a review process with its own eligibility bar.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Business Profile the same as the green tick?+
No. The Business Profile is the set of information — name, logo, category, description, address, email and website — shown to customers. The green tick (verified badge) is a separate status Meta may grant to eligible official business accounts. A complete, honest profile helps you qualify for the green tick but is not the same thing, and you can operate fully without a badge.
Can I change my Business Profile fields after going live?+
Yes. Most fields — profile photo, about, description, address, email, website and category — can be updated from the InfiQ dashboard at any time. The display name is the exception: it is governed by Meta's display-name policy and any change goes through review, so pick it carefully at setup.
Does the Business Profile affect what I pay for messages?+
Not directly. WhatsApp bills per delivered message by category — marketing, utility or authentication —, and InfiQ applies transparent ₹ pricing on those rates (ex-GST). Your profile itself carries no per-message cost, but a strong profile improves quality and reply rates, which protects your messaging limits and makes each rupee you spend work harder.
What are the rules for my WhatsApp display name?+
The display name must reflect your real, legal or widely recognised brand name and follow Meta's display-name guidelines — it cannot be a generic term, a phone number, a URL, or a purely promotional phrase. It is reviewed by Meta, so submit an accurate brand name at onboarding to avoid rejection or delays.
Do I need a website and physical address to complete my profile?+
They are not strictly mandatory for every field, but a working website and a valid address add significant credibility, help customers verify you, and strengthen any future green tick application. For online-only businesses, a live website and business email carry most of that trust weight.
Where do customers actually see my Business Profile?+
Customers see it when they tap your business name at the top of the chat to open the business info screen. Your display name and profile photo also appear in their chat list and message headers, which is why a recognisable logo and correct name matter so much for that first impression.
How do I set up my Business Profile with InfiQ?+
During onboarding, an InfiQ specialist configures your profile fields on the WhatsApp Business Platform against your number, and you retain control to edit them later from the dashboard. Because you keep full ownership of your BSUID and WhatsApp Business Account, your profile and identity stay yours.
