Chapter 1 · The scenario
Example: A sweet shop drops the phone number from its boxes
A mithai brand in Kolkata used to print a mobile number on every box, which brought in wrong-number calls and spam. When it claimed its reserved handle in July 2026, it reprinted the boxes with the username and a QR code. Customers now search for the handle in WhatsApp and land in the same chat they used before, under the same display name, while the marketing team watches the business_username_updates webhook so it would notice at once if the handle were ever revoked.
Chapter 2 · What is a WhatsApp business username?
A business username is a unique handle, such as @chennaisilks, that a business can claim on WhatsApp so people can search for it and start a chat without knowing its phone number. Usernames are part of a wider 2026 change: WhatsApp users are also getting usernames, gradually through the year, so both sides of a conversation can talk without exchanging numbers.
Each business phone number can carry one username. From 29 June 2026 businesses could claim usernames Meta had reserved for them and adopt or change usernames through the Cloud API, in WhatsApp Manager or through their provider. A username must be 3 to 35 characters, use only English letters a–z, digits, periods and underscores, and contain at least one letter. It cannot start or end with a period, contain two periods in a row, begin with www. or end in a domain suffix such as .com or .org. Case is ignored, but periods and underscores count, so chennai.silks and chennai_silks are different handles.
Three identity fields are easy to confuse. The display name is the brand name shown at the top of a chat, reviewed against Meta's naming rules. The business username is the searchable handle, unique across WhatsApp. The Business-Scoped User ID (BSUID) is not a business field at all: it is the ID your systems receive for each customer, which matters most when that customer hides their own number behind a WhatsApp username.
Key takeaways
- A business username is a unique handle that lets customers find and message a business on WhatsApp without its phone number.
- Businesses could claim reserved usernames, and adopt or change them through the API, from 29 June 2026.
- Rules: 3–35 characters, only a–z, 0–9, periods and underscores, at least one letter, and no domain endings like .com.
- The username is not the display name: the display name is the reviewed brand name in the chat header.
- Meta can revoke a username; the
business_username_updateswebhook reports approved, reserved and deleted states.
Chapter 3 · How it unfolds
How does a WhatsApp business username work?
Check for a reserved username
Meta reserved usernames for many established businesses before the launch. Look in WhatsApp Manager, or ask your provider to query the current username for each number; a reserved handle shows a
reservedstatus.Pick a handle that passes the rules
Use your brand name in lowercase letters, digits, periods or underscores, 3–35 characters, with at least one letter. Avoid
www.at the start and domain endings like.comor.inat the end.Claim or set it on the number
Claim the reserved handle or request a new one for the phone number, in WhatsApp Manager or through the API. Once it is live, customers can find you by searching for it.

Add the handle to packaging, store signage, email footers and ads, and keep your wa.me links and QR codes for people who still prefer them.

Chapter 5 · Where it goes wrong
Common mistakes with a WhatsApp business username
Confusing the username with the display name
Changing the handle does not change the name in the chat header, and a new display name does not change the handle. Plan both, and keep them recognisably the same brand.
Picking a handle that looks like a website
Handles ending in
.com,.orgor similar suffixes, or starting withwww., are rejected. Use the brand word itself, such asexamplestore, notexamplestore.com.Assuming dots and underscores are interchangeable
Case does not matter, but punctuation does:
asha.foodsandasha_foodsare two different usernames. Claim the variant you print, and consider claiming the obvious alternative on another number. Not watching for revocation
Meta can revoke a username that breaks its rules or someone else's rights. Without the
business_username_updateswebhook you may keep printing a handle that no longer reaches you.
Chapter 6 · Why it matters
Why does a WhatsApp business username matter?
A handle is easier to print, say on radio or put on a shop sign than a ten-digit number, and it cannot be mistyped into a stranger's chat. It also protects the brand: if a business does not claim its name, a lookalike may claim something close. For marketers it adds a discoverable entry point next to click-to-chat links and QR codes, without exposing the number to scrapers.
Chapter 7 · What good teams do
Best practices for a WhatsApp business username
- Claim your reserved username early, before customers start searching for it.
- Keep the handle short and spell-able over the phone; skip punctuation where you can.
- Use the same handle on every channel where possible, so customers recognise it.
- Brief support agents that some customers will now arrive by username, without sharing a phone number.
