Udgir fort dates from the pre-Bahmani period, with its origin given as the 12th century, and is named after the saint Udgiri Rishi; the samadhi of Udgir Maharaj lies about 60 feet below ground level.[3]
At the fort the Marathas, led by Sadashivrao Bhau, defeated the Nizam, and the Treaty of Udgir was signed; a trench about 40 feet deep surrounds it, and it carries rare Arabic and Persian inscriptions.[3]
Hattibet-Deverjan, which the district also calls Elephant Island, is a listed place to visit in Udgir taluka.[4]
The town lies close to the Karnataka and Telangana borders, and Udgir station, in South Central Railway's Secunderabad division, has trains to Hyderabad, Bidar and Latur.[5]
