Tura is the headquarters of West Garo Hills and, in the district's words, the second largest town in the state after Shillong.[2],[1]
The Garo Hills district was divided into West and East Garo Hills in October 1976, and West Garo Hills into West and South Garo Hills in June 1992.[2]
The district covers 3,614 sq km in 4 sub-divisions and 8 blocks, with 1 municipality and 1,209 villages, and lists Garo, Hindi and English as its languages.[1]
The high ranges of the Tura range have been protected as catchment areas since British administration, and the whole range now comes under the management of Nokrek National Park.[2]
