For Williamnagar's pineapple traders, the shops of the largest growth centre in Garo Hills after Tura, and the cabs and guides who drive people to Guwahati and to Chisobibra: how a chat that starts in Garo moves between replies and English templates, and what each message costs in rupees.
See it work
A chat that starts in Garo, step by step
A grower writes to a Williamnagar pineapple trader in Garo. Garo is not a Meta template language, so the trader's free replies can be in Garo but any message after the window closes has to be an approved template in English or Hindi. Walk the chat through its states.
Every reply the grower prompts is in his own language and costs the service rate. Only the messages that go out after a quiet day need a template, and those are the ones a Williamnagar business writes once in English and reuses.

From the East Garo Hills district administration's pages, IBEF's Meghalaya profile and Invest India's ODOP list.
- 01
Williamnagar is a planned township named after Captain Williamson A. Sangma, the first Chief Minister of Meghalaya, and the district calls it the largest growth centre in Garo Hills after Tura.[2]
- 02
East Garo Hills was upgraded from a sub-division to a district in 1976; in 2012 North Garo Hills district was formed from its Resubelpara sub-division.[2]
- 03
The district covers 1,517 sq km with 3 blocks, 1 municipality and 492 villages, and lists Garo and English as its languages.[1]
- 04
It borders South Garo Hills, West Garo Hills, North Garo Hills and West Khasi Hills.[1]
- 05
The Arbella Range, with peaks of about 700 metres, cuts through the south-central district, and the Simsang, or Someshwari, the longest river in Garo Hills, flows through its southern valley.[3]
- 06
The Manda (Dudhnoi) and Damring (Krishnoi) rivers rise in the district and run north towards the Brahmaputra.[3]
- 07
At Chisobibra, in the Rongrengiri Reserve Forest, the British defeated Pa Togan Nengminja, one of the most famous Garo freedom fighters; a park and memorial stand there, and a memorial function is held every year.[4]
- 08
The nearest airport and railhead are both at Guwahati.[4]
- 09
Invest India's ODOP list names pineapple for East Garo Hills; IBEF lists English, Khasi, Pnar and Garo as Meghalaya's languages.[6],[5]

Questions Williamnagar businesses ask
- Q1
Growers write to our Williamnagar pineapple trading firm in Garo. Can our WhatsApp templates be in Garo too?
No. Garo is not one of Meta's template languages, so templates such as the payment note must be in English (en or en_IN) or Hindi (hi). Replies inside the 24-hour window are not templates, so your staff can answer growers in Garo whenever they write first.
- Q2
We send East Garo Hills pineapple from Williamnagar to buyers in Guwahati. Can the truck number and loading time go on WhatsApp?
Yes. A consignment note for an order the buyer placed is a utility template at ₹0.19, with variables for the truck number, the crates and the expected arrival. If the buyer writes back, your answers for the next 24 hours are replies at ₹0.145.
- Q3
Visitors ask our Williamnagar taxi service about the drive to the Pa Togan Nengminja memorial at Chisobibra. Is our reply marketing?
No. The visitor asked, so the fare, the timing and the route are replies at ₹0.145 each, in whatever language they wrote. If they book and you send the pickup details the evening before, that is a utility template at ₹0.19.
- Q4
Our Williamnagar shop supplies customers in villages along the Simsang valley. Can we send all of them a new-stock note?
Only those who agreed to hear about stock and offers. A new-stock note sent unasked is a marketing template at ₹0.94, approved in English or Hindi. Ask for the yes at the counter or when a customer next writes to you, and InfiQ records when and where each one was given.
- Q5
Travellers book our Williamnagar cab to Guwahati for early flights and trains. What does the reminder the night before cost?
A reminder about a ride the passenger booked is a utility template at ₹0.19 per delivered message, with the pickup time, the driver's name and the vehicle number as variables. A passenger who replies to change the time opens a 24-hour window for replies.
- Q6
Meghalaya lists English as a state language and our Williamnagar office writes everything in it. Should templates use English or English (India)?
Either works: Meta treats English (en) and English (India) (en_IN) as separate template languages, each approved on its own. Pick one and use it consistently, and keep a Hindi (hi) version only if some of your buyers or drivers prefer it.
