Dhubri has been a district headquarters since 1879, on a river port that trades with Bangladesh. Every December its Gurudwara on the Brahmaputra fills with devotees, and its lodges hear from them for weeks before.

Dhubri was one of the three civil subdivisions of the old Goalpara district, established in 1876; the district headquarters moved from Goalpara to Dhubri in 1879.[2]
Dhubri became a district in 1983, when Goalpara was divided into four, and South Salmara-Mankachar was carved from it in 2016.[2]
The name is told as coming from Netai Dhubuni, who washed clothes on a stone by the Brahmaputra, or from dubri, a grass in Bodo.[2]
The Brahmaputra runs through the district from east to west, the Brahmaputra and the Gadadhar bound it on three sides, and a busy river port handles international trade with Bangladesh; West Bengal and Bangladesh lie to the west.[2]
Guru Nanak passed through in 1505 on his way from Dhaka, and Guru Tegh Bahadur established the Gurudwara in the seventeenth century; devotees from across India and abroad gather there every December to mark his martyrdom.[4]
The district lists Mahamaya Dham at Bogribari, the seventeenth-century Rangamati Mosque, the Panchpeer Dargah, the terracotta village of Asharikandi and the Chakrashila Wildlife Sanctuary among its sights.[1]
Rupsi airport is about 15 km from the town, which is on NH 31 and linked by rail with Guwahati, Siliguri and Cooch Behar; the district has two co-districts, Golakganj and Bilasipara.[3]
