Kannur district covers 2,966 sq km and has a population of 25,23,003, with five taluks, nine municipalities and one corporation.[1]
The district's history page records rock-cut caves, dolmens and menhirs across the Taliparamba–Kannur–Thalassery area, and a branch of Annie Besant's Home Rule League in Thalassery with V.K. Krishna Menon among its workers.[2]

Kannur International Airport is listed 25 km from Kannur, with Calicut 128 km and Mangaluru 149 km away.[3]
The ODOP list names handloom products for Kannur; IBEF lists handlooms, spices and food processing among Kerala's key industries and names Kerala a leading pepper producer.[4],[5]
The British built a factory at Tellicherry in 1694 for the spice trade, and the town became a municipality on 1 November 1866.[6]
Arthur Wellesley played cricket on the town maidan in 1800; Keeleri Kunhikannan founded a circus school in 1901; and Hermann Gundert published two early Malayalam newspapers from Illikunnu in 1847.[6]

Malayalam on the cake box, English for the tourist
