Vatakara in seven lines
From Invest India's ODOP list, the Sargaalaya crafts village, Meta's pricing documentation and, for the town's history and general profile, Wikipedia.
Vatakara, also written Vadakara, was known as Kadathanadu under the Kolathiris and the Zamorins, and was a trading centre by the early eighteenth century, sending out pepper, coffee and coconut.[3]
The town is tied to Kalaripayattu and to Thacholi Othenan, a hero of the Vadakkan Pattukal ballads; the Lokanarkavu temple nearby belongs to the same ballads and holds its Pooram festival.[3]
Fishing is one of its main commercial activities, and Nut Street is a distribution centre for coconuts and areca nuts; Invest India's ODOP list names coconut products for Kozhikode.[3],[1]
Many of the town's residents work in Middle Eastern countries, and the money they send home shapes the local economy.[3]
The Sargaalaya Kerala Arts and Crafts Village at Iringal, in Payyoli municipality, brings artisans from more than 20 traditional villages under one roof, with live craft work and workshops.[2]
The Uralungal Labour Contract Co-operative Society, registered in 1925, is centred in Madappally near the town.[3]
Meta charges for each delivered message by its category and by the recipient's country calling code, so the same message costs differently to a +91 number and to a number abroad.[4]
