A port town that still lives off its coast
Before it was Koyilandy, the town was Pantalayani Kollam, an old port often linked with Tyndis, the feeder port to Muziris. Its Jumu'ah mosque carries an Old Malayalam inscription from around the tenth century. Vasco da Gama visited in 1498; the Portuguese raided the town in 1505 and again in 1525, and the Zamorin of Calicut later extended his control over it.
Today the coast draws visitors of a different kind. Kozhikode's district administration lists Thikkodi, a drive-in beach near Koyilandy; Parappalli, a surf spot on the rock hills of Kollam beach; and the Kadalur Point lighthouse, also called the Nandi lighthouse. Kappad, further down the same coast, is where the district tourism council says Vasco da Gama and his crew landed.
Each of those places produces the same kind of message to a homestay or a cab: how do we get there, is it open, can you take us. On the official WhatsApp Business API, every answer to such a question is a reply. A Koyilandy business needs templates only for the few times it speaks first.
