Salvador and India, on the record

The city's own tourism figures and what the Embassy of India in Brasília reports about Bahia and the wider trade.

The city's tourism portal presents Salvador as Brazil's first capital, with 39,000 hotel beds in more than 300 places to stay, over 5,200 restaurants and five convention centres, and bills its carnival as the biggest on the planet.[1]

The Embassy of India notes that the Gandhian group Filhos de Gandhy is popular in Salvador and holds street processions every year.[2]

The Governor of Bahia accompanied Brazil's President on his visit to India in February 2026.[2]

India–Brazil trade grew by over 25% to USD 15.21 billion in 2025. India sells diesel, agrochemicals, chemicals and pharmaceuticals; Brazil sells crude oil, soybean oil and raw sugar.[2]

Consular matters for Bahia fall to the Embassy of India in Brasília; the Consulate General in São Paulo covers five southern and south-eastern states.[3]
