A town that was two
For sixty years the census counted Paramakudi and Emaneswaran separately. Since 1964 they have been one municipality, and for a shop that delivers, that is one customer list. The trader on the bazaar road and the household across town are on the same number and need the same notices: your goods are packed, the van comes at four, the balance is due on Friday.
What the merger did not change is how the villages buy. A shopkeeper who comes into Paramakudi for stock writes first, asks for rates and decides. That conversation is a run of replies. The template is for the day after, when the shop writes on its own to say the order is on its way, and that template is worth approving once in Tamil so every counter uses the same words.
