Sivaganga district was carved out of the composite Ramnad district in 1984 and has functioned since 15 March 1985. It covers 4,189 sq km in nine taluks, Karaikudi among them.[1]
Karaikudi is the district's one corporation, beside three municipalities (Sivagangai, Devakottai and Manamadurai) and eleven town panchayats.[1]
The district calls the Chettinad houses of Karaikudi, Pallathur, Athangudi and Kothamangalam the most lavish, and the Aayiram Jannal Veedu a famous landmark of Karaikudi town.[2]
Chettinad Palace, 10 km from Karaikudi, dates from 1912; Kanadukathan, whose houses have doors that resemble temple gateways, is very close to the town.[2]
Athangudi, 24 km from Karaikudi, is known across the country for hand-made tiles made only there.[2]
CSIR-CECRI in Karaikudi works in six research groups, from corrosion protection and electroplating to power sources, and runs an NABL-accredited battery test facility and training courses for industry.[4]
CECRI's director writes that more than twenty of the institute's technologies have been commercialised.[4]
