Ramanathapuram in eight lines

Ramanathapuram became a Third Grade municipality in 1959, Second Grade in 1975, First Grade in 1984 and Special Grade in 2019; it covers 6.33 sq km, and its office is on Annal Gandhiadigal Salai.[1]
The district was formed in 1910 from parts of Madurai and Tirunelveli, with J.F. Bryant as its first collector; it was called Ramnad under the British.[2]
On 15 March 1985 the old district was divided into Sivagangai, Virudhunagar and the present Ramanathapuram, which now has nine taluks including Keelakarai, Kadaladi and RS Mangalam.[2]
The district is bounded by the Palk Bay and the Gulf of Mannar to the east and south, and the Vaigai ends its journey here in the Palk Strait.[2]

Uthirakosamangai, 18 km from the town, has an ancient Siva temple whose deity is carved in emerald; the district's list also includes Devipattinam's Nava Bashanam, the 2.2 km Pamban bridge and Dhanushkodi, washed away by the 1964 cyclone.[3]
In the late seventeenth century Raghunatha Kilavan Sethupathi declared himself king of Ramnad and moved his seat here; the Raja Palace is still lived in by the former royal family.[5]
NH 49 links the town to Madurai and Rameswaram, the East Coast Road runs along the coast, and Madurai airport is about 125 km away.[5]
