Gajapati became a separate district on 2 October 1992, when it was separated from Ganjam; Paralakhemundi is its headquarters and its one municipality, with Kashinagar as its NAC.[1],[2]
The district is named after Maharaja Sri Krushna Chandra Gajapati Narayan Deo, former Raja of the Paralakhemundi estate and the first Prime Minister of Odisha, remembered for helping form a separate Odisha province and bringing the estate into it.[1]
The Paralakhemundi kingdom dates from the later half of the 15th century, when Kolahomee, one of the sons of Kapilendra Deo, conquered this part of Odisha.[2]
Gajapati covers 3,850 sq km in 7 tahasils and 7 blocks, with 1,534 villages; the 2011 Census counted 577,817 people, of whom 70,666 lived in towns.[1],[4]
The district calls its economy agrarian: paddy, sugarcane, sunflower and oilseeds are grown, the town is the nodal point for marketing farm products, and there is no major industry apart from agro-processing units.[3]
Its cottage industries include horn work, Jaikhadi bags, cane and bamboo work, Pattachitra, broom making, siali leaf plates and Tibetan woollen carpets.[3]
