Market brief
From the district administration's own pages, which use the spelling Nabarangpur.
The district has functioned since 2 October 1992; before that it was a sub-division of the former Koraput district.[2]
It covers 5,294 sq km, of which 1,583.40 sq km (29.91%) is forest, with 10 blocks, 10 tahasils and 887 villages.[3],[1]
The 2011 census counted 12,20,946 people, 55.79% of them from Scheduled Tribes; 4,70,379 people, or 38.53%, were recorded as literate.[3]
More than 90% of the district's people depend on farming, largely rain-fed; paddy is grown everywhere, and maize, sugarcane and vegetables are the other prominent crops.[4]
Government farms at Dabugaon and Umerkote produce certified seed in the kharif season, supplied to farmers through the Odisha State Seed Corporation.[4]
The Indravati forms the border with Koraput; to the north and west the district reaches the Raipur and Bastar districts of Chhattisgarh.[2]
Mondei, usually held after the harvest, is the district's most widely celebrated festival.[2]

Paddy is grown everywhere and maize is the district's other big crop, so growers selling a harvest want the rate, the weighment and the payment date.[4]
The agriculture department sells tractors, power tillers and combine harvesters on subsidy, so showrooms handle paperwork as well as sales.[4]
Vegetables are a prominent crop, and the National Horticulture Mission works on fruit and vegetable growing in the district.[4],[2]
Tentulikhunti has granite and Heeraput hematite and limonite; the district notes that its minerals feed industries elsewhere.[2]
