Balangir in nine lines

Balangir district covers 6,575 sq km in 3 sub-divisions, 14 tahasils and 14 blocks, with 5 urban local bodies.[1]
Named after its headquarters town, the district was formed on 1 November 1949; Balangir comes from Balaramgarh, a fort built in the 16th century by Balram Deo.[1],[2]
Patna was an important state of western Odisha under the Chauhans from the 14th century; Ramai Deo founded it, and it soon led a group of eighteen garhs.[2]
The Marathas of Nagpur held Patna from 1755, and Chauhan rule ended when the state merged with Orissa on 1 January 1948; Subarnapur district was carved out on 1 April 1993.[2]
The Chausathi Yogini temple at Ranipur-Jharial is, the district says, one of four such temples in India; it also pictures Harisankar, Saintala Chandi, Jogisarada and Bhima Dunguri.[2],[1]
By the district's account, agriculture supports over 70% of the population, mostly with a single crop of paddy, cotton, til or mustard.[3]
It counts 12,714 handloom units and 1,560 cottage industries, and says forest produce such as kendu leaf, mahula and broom adds to rural women's income, often through self-help groups.[3]
Graphite and quartz are mined in the district, and graphite, bauxite and manganese are among its natural resources.[3]
