Krishnanagar in seven lines
From the Nadia district administration and Invest India's ODOP list, with Wikipedia only for the town's history, festivals and transport.
Krishnanagar is the headquarters of Nadia, on the Jalangi; the district calls it a traditional city and lists the Nadiaraj palace, the Rajbari, among its attractions.[1],[2]
The district says the town is known for clay models and terracotta and for its sarpuria and sarbhaja sweets; Invest India's ODOP list names clay dolls as Nadia's second product, after its handloom sarees.[2],[4]
The town is named after Raja Krishna Chandra Roy (1728–1782) and was earlier called Reui; its municipality, established in 1864, is among the oldest in Bengal.[3],[5]
Ghurni is the neighbourhood of the clay artists, whose open studios and shops draw visitors.[5]
Jagaddhatri Puja is celebrated across the town's clubs and neighbourhoods; the Rajbari holds the Jhulan Mela in July–August and the Baro Dol in March–April.[5]
Nabadwip lies about 20 km away, Ballal Dhipi about 25 km on the way to Mayapur, and Palashi about 50 km; the Bethuadahari sanctuary is 22 km north.[3]
Krishnanagar City Junction is on the Lalgola branch of the Eastern Railway, with EMU trains to Kolkata, and National Highway 12 passes through the town.[5]
