WhatsApp Business API for Kishanganj's tea factories, fruit traders and hotels

Kishanganj grows and packs tea in Bihar's north-east corner, between Nepal and West Bengal, on the highway and the railway towards Guwahati. A truck of pineapples and a carton of packed tea leave the same district, and they need different messages.

For Kishanganj's tea factories, pineapple and dragon fruit growers and traders, the transporters on NH 31, and the hotels and shops of a district headquarters on the Rajdhani line: which WhatsApp messages a fruit lot and a tea order need, which templates go in Hindi, Urdu or Bengali, and what each costs.

See it work

A truck of pineapples against a carton of tea

Two Kishanganj sellers write to their buyers on WhatsApp. Compare them row by row: the fruit trader's messages race the clock, while the tea factory's are fewer, slower and include the odd offer.

Most of what both sellers send is the same kind of message: a note about something the buyer already ordered, sent to a buyer who agreed to updates. That is a utility template, and it is the cheapest message a seller can start. The 24-hour service window covers everything said in reply to a buyer who wrote first.

The difference is marketing. A fruit trader rarely needs it: buyers ring or write when they want a lot. A tea factory selling at trade fairs and online does, and every buyer on that list must have said yes to offers.

Verdict

A fruit trader lives on two or three fast utility templates; a tea factory adds one good marketing template for buyers who opted in.

Both columns use the same rules: a reply inside 24 hours of the buyer's message needs no template; anything the seller starts is an approved template, utility when it is about the buyer's own order and marketing when it promotes.

Verdict: A fruit trader lives on two or three fast utility templates; a tea factory adds one good marketing template for buyers who opted in.

Kishanganj from the district's own pages

From the Kishanganj district website and its ODOP page, Invest India's ODOP list and IBEF's Bihar profile.

Kishanganj, long an important subdivision of Purnea, became a district on 14 January 1990 after a seventeen-year campaign; the district's page traces the name to Krishna-Kunj, set aside from what was then called Alamganj.[2]

The district covers 1,884 sq km with 7 blocks, 125 panchayats and 4 municipalities.[1]

It borders Araria to the west, Purnia to the south-west, Uttar Dinajpur to the east, and Darjeeling and Nepal to the north; a strip of West Bengal about 20 km wide separates it from Bangladesh.[3]

The Mahananda, Kankai, Mechi, Donk, Ratua and Ramzan Sudhani rivers cross the district.[3]

Kishanganj station is on the Northeast Frontier Railway, with direct trains to New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Guwahati, Bengaluru and Chennai and a Rajdhani stop; NH 31 passes through the district.[3]

Tea is the district's ODOP. Its page counts eleven tea factories, names units at Thakurganj and Pothia, and lists GeM, ONDC, the Khadi Mall in Patna and the India International Trade Fair among their channels.[4]

Invest India's ODOP list gives Kishanganj three products: tea, pineapple and dragon fruit.[5]

IBEF ranks Bihar the eighth-largest producer of fruits and the fourth-largest of vegetables in India.[6]

Questions Kishanganj businesses ask

  1. Q1

Our tea factory at Thakurganj also sells on GeM and ONDC. Can we send those buyers dispatch notes on WhatsApp?

Yes, to buyers who agreed to WhatsApp updates; the orders themselves stay on GeM and ONDC. A dispatch note with the courier and docket number and no offer in it is a utility template at ₹0.19. Write it in English for buyers outside Bihar and in Hindi for the rest.

  2. Q2

We met buyers for our Kishanganj tea at the India International Trade Fair. Can we send them our new flush on WhatsApp?

Only buyers who said yes to offers, and you should note at the stall when each one did. A new-flush message is a marketing template at ₹0.94. Meta does not deliver marketing templates to US (+1) numbers, so a US buyer gets dispatch notes and your replies, not the offer.

  3. Q3

Pineapple lots from Kishanganj leave by truck on NH 31. Can the buyer get the truck number and arrival time on WhatsApp?

Yes. A note about the buyer's own lot, with the truck number, the driver's phone and the expected arrival, is a utility template at ₹0.19. If the buyer replies to ask about the count or the ripeness, your staff can answer freely for 24 hours, each reply at ₹0.145.

  4. Q4

Dragon fruit growers in Kishanganj want to tell buyers when a harvest is ready. Is that utility or marketing?

It depends on the buyer. For a buyer who has booked or ordered a lot, a harvest-ready note about that order is utility at ₹0.19. For a buyer who has not ordered, a note offering the new harvest is marketing at ₹0.94 and needs their opt-in to offers.

  5. Q5

Guests reach our Kishanganj hotel off the Rajdhani. Can we confirm rooms and the station pickup on WhatsApp?

Yes. Answers to a guest who wrote first are replies for 24 hours. A booking confirmation, or a reminder with the driver's name and number the evening before arrival, is a utility template at ₹0.19 to guests who agreed to updates. Lite, at ₹999 a month with 10 inbox users, is usually enough; start with a 7-day trial, no card needed.

  6. Q6

Customers around Kishanganj write in Urdu, Bengali and Surjapuri. Which of those can our templates use?

Urdu (ur) and Bengali (bn) are on Meta's template list, as is Hindi (hi); Surjapuri is not. Write templates in the languages your customers read, each version approved separately, and answer in Surjapuri inside the 24-hour window, when no template is needed.
