Araria has been an administrative centre since it became a sub-division in 1864, and a district since 1990. Its paddy, maize and jute leave by NH 27 and the Katihar–Jogbani line, and Nepal begins just past Jogbani.
For Araria's jute and maize traders, the district's makhana sellers, shops in Araria and Forbesganj that serve customers from across the Nepal border, and the town's clinics: which WhatsApp messages are replies, which need a Hindi, Urdu or English template, and what each costs in rupees.

Araria was constituted as a sub-division in 1864 by merging the small divisions of Araria, Matiari and Dimia with parts of Haveli and Bahadurganj, and it became a district in 1990.[2]
Araria town is the district headquarters, in Purnea division. The district has two sub-divisions, Araria and Forbesganj, nine blocks and three municipalities.[1]
Forbesganj is named after A.J. Forbes, who founded the Sultanpur estate and several indigo factories.[2]
The district's economy depends mainly on agriculture, and its main produce is paddy, maize and jute; the district site also mentions a view of Kanchenjunga.[3],[1]
Makhana and jute are Araria's products on the ODOP list.[4]
Nepal lies to the north, Kishanganj to the east and Supaul to the south-west; Jogbani is the last point before Nepal's Morang district.[10]
Araria Court station is on the Katihar–Jogbani branch line, the town is connected to NH 27, and Purnia has the nearest airport. The film Teesri Kasam, from a Phanishwar Nath 'Renu' story, was shot in Araria's villages.[10]
IBEF names food and beverages and textiles among Bihar's key industries and lists food processing among its fastest-growing.[5]
