The undivided Khowai began its administration in 1910 under an SDO and was once the second-largest subdivision in Tripura. It was split into the Khowai and Teliamura subdivisions in 2006.[2]

The district covers 1,377.28 sq km, with 6 blocks, 3 revenue circles, 19 tehsil offices and two municipal councils, Khowai and Teliamura. Its headquarters is at Khowai Office tilla.[1],[2]

Bangladesh lies to the north. The Atharamura range runs along the east and the Hathaikotor range, formerly called Baramura, along the west. The Khowai river passes through the town and gives the district its name.[1],[2]

Its people are Bengalis and Tripuris, and both Bengali and Kokborok are spoken. Durga Puja, Saraswati Puja, Kharchi and Garia Puja are its main festivals.[2]

In 2017-18 the agriculture department counted 32,079 farmer families, a gross cropped area of 61,849 hectares on 33,213 hectares of net cropped land, and a cropping intensity of 186%.[3]

The nearest railway station is Teliamura, and NH 8 and NH 208 pass through the district. Baramura Eco Park is about 38 km from Khowai and Chakmaghat Park about 43 km, both on NH 8.[5],[4]

A town that has been sending notices for a long time
