North Tripura covers 1,422.19 sq km and lists 4,44,579 people, 3 sub-divisions, 8 blocks and one municipality; it is mostly hilly.[1]
The district began functioning after recognition on 26 December 2011 and was inaugurated on 13 January 2012.[1]
It shares 96 km of international border with Bangladesh, 44 km of it in Dharmanagar sub-division, and borders Assam for 53 km and Mizoram for 109 km.[1]
The district has about 1.13 crore agar trees, the most in Tripura, and around 15,000 families work in agarwood cultivation and processing; Kadamtala block is a significant producer.[2]
Paddy is the main crop; pineapple, jackfruit, orange, lemon, litchi and banana are grown, and a large share of Tripura's pineapple comes from North Tripura.[2]
Dharmanagar, the district's largest town, is its hub for educational institutions, markets and administrative services; rice mills, sawmills, food processing units and weaving centres operate there and in Panisagar.[2]
The Jampui Hills, Tripura's highest range at about 3,000 ft, rise in the district, with paying-guest lodging at Vanghmun; the Rowa Wildlife Sanctuary is near Panisagar.[3]
