Kasaragod district was formed on 24 May 1984 from the Hosdurg and Kasaragod taluks of undivided Kannur, and Kanhangad became a municipality on 1 June 1984.[2]

The district lies at the northern tip of Kerala between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea, covers 1,992 sq km and lists a population of 10,71,508, with three municipalities: Kasaragod, Kanhangad and Nileshwaram.[1],[2]

NH66 passes Kanhangad and Kasaragod on its way to Mangaluru, and Kanhangad station sits on the Kozhikode–Mangaluru–Mumbai line, where almost all express trains stop.[3]
