Chengalpattu district was created on 29 November 2019, carved out of the erstwhile Kancheepuram district.[1]
It covers about 2,945 sq km on the north-east coast of Tamil Nadu, with 57 km of coastline and 54 km of the Palar before it meets the sea.[2]
Siruseri SIPCOT IT Park lies in Thirupporur taluk, and the Madras Export Processing Zone at Tambaram hosts IT and BPO companies.[2]
The district calls Maraimalai Nagar the 'Detroit of Chengalpattu district' for its automobile units.[2]
Mahindra World City holds IT, auto ancillary and apparel and fashion SEZs, alongside domestic tariff area units.[2]
Agriculture is the main occupation. Rice leads, with Madurantakam, Cheyyur and Thirukkazhukkundram the major producers; Cheyyur and Thirupporur grow groundnut and pulses.[2]
NH45 runs from Meenambakkam through Tambaram, Guduvancheri, Maraimalai Nagar and Chengalpattu towards southern Tamil Nadu; the East Coast Road runs through Mamallapuram to Puducherry. Chennai suburban trains stop at Tambaram and Chengalpattu (CGL).[2]
Vedanthangal is one of India's major water bird sanctuaries, and Mamallapuram is the district's ancient port city.[3]

A business in Tambaram and a rice mill in Madurantakam share a district but not a customer.
