Dhulian in eight lines

Murshidabad district covers 5,324 sq km with five subdivisions, 26 blocks and eight municipalities, Dhulian among them, and lists Hindi, Bengali and English as its languages.[1],[2]
Jangipur subdivision's blocks are Farakka, Raghunathganj I and II, Sagardighi, Samsherganj and Suti I and II; Dhulian Municipality's office is on Dhulian Pakur Road, PIN 742202.[3],[2]

Dhulian became a municipality in 1909 and is the headquarters of Samsherganj block; it began as a ferry point and grew into a river-mart for biri, jute and rice.[6]
It lies on the right bank of the Ganga, between the river and the Farakka Feeder Canal; the old town was washed away by the river in the early 1950s, and the town has shifted south-west.[6]
NH 12 runs through the New Duckbunglow area towards Kolkata and Siliguri, a road leads to Pakur in Jharkhand, and Dhulian Ghat has a ferry to Parlalpur Ghat in Malda.[6]
Dhulian Ganga station is on the Barharwa–Azimganj–Katwa loop, and the town trades rice, flour and spices wholesale and retail.[6]

A town the river keeps moving
The Ganga washed old Dhulian away and the town moved south-west; its customers stayed on the same phone numbers.
The river washed old Dhulian away in the early 1950s, and the town has shifted south-west since. For a trading firm, the one address that does not move is its WhatsApp number: the Pakur shopkeeper, the Malda trader who comes across by ferry and the buyer in Siliguri all reach it wherever the shop now stands.
