Damoh district lies in the north-east of Madhya Pradesh, bordered by Sagar to the west, Narsinghpur and Jabalpur to the south, Chhatarpur to the north and Panna and Katni to the east.[1]
By the tradition the district's history page relates, Damoh takes its name from Damayanti, queen of Narwar and wife of King Nal.[2]
The Nohleshwar temple at Nohta dates from the 10th-century Kalachuri period, when part of the district belonged to the Chedi kingdom ruled from Tripuri.[2],[4]
In the last decade of the 15th century the Gond ruler Sangram Singh took the area into a kingdom of 52 forts; Rani Durgavati later fell at Singrampur fighting the Mughal general Asaf Khan.[2]
Gram is the district's main crop and wheat is sown in nearly every block; paddy grows mainly around Jabera, Tendukheda, Patera and Damoh.[3]
