Surguja lies in the north of Chhattisgarh and covers 5,732 sq km, with 7 development blocks, 1 municipal corporation, 2 nagar panchayats and 439 gram panchayats.[1]
Ambikapur was the capital of the princely state. After taking control in 1882, Raghunath Sharan Singh Deo set up a middle school, a post office, a telegraph office, a jail and courts there.[2]
Most of the district's people are Adivasi. About 58% of its area is forest, monsoon deciduous forest that yields commercial timber and other high-value produce.[2]
Rice is the dominant crop, and about 90% of the working population depends on agriculture; Ambikapur block has the highest share of cultivated land, at 74.51%.[4]
Surguja holds about 57% of the state's recoverable bauxite, concentrated on the Mainpat, Samri and Jamirapat plateaus, and coalfields including Lakhanpur.[4]
Mainpat, 75 km from Ambikapur, is called Chhattisgarh's Shimla; Ramgarh hill on the Ambikapur–Bilaspur road is the oldest of Surguja's historical sites; Kailash Cave is about 60 km east.[3]
