Alipurduar was established on 25 June 2014, carved out of Jalpaiguri as West Bengal's 20th district, with its headquarters at Alipurduar town.[1],[2]
It covers 3,136 sq km and had 1,501,983 people at the 2011 census, in one subdivision, six blocks, 64 gram panchayats and two municipalities, Alipurduar and Falakata.[1]
The district borders Bhutan to the north, Assam to the east, Cooch Behar to the south and Jalpaiguri to the west; its rivers include the Torsa, Raidak, Kaljani, Sankosh and Jayanti.[2]
It is predominantly rural, with more than 80% of its people from Scheduled Castes or Scheduled Tribes; its communities include Rajbanshi, Rabha, Mech, Bodo, Toto, Tamang, Lepcha and many others.[2]
The Buxa Tiger Reserve covers 760 sq km; Jaldapara National Park lies at the foothills of the eastern Himalayas, and Chilapata is a wildlife sanctuary in the eastern Dooars.[3]
Jaigaon is the district's town near the Bhutan border, and the Jayanti river forms a natural border with the Bhutan hills.[3]
Bagdogra is the nearest airport, 142.4 km away via NH 27; the Kanchan Kanya, Padatik and Teesta Torsa expresses run from New Alipurduar to Kolkata.[4]
