Meta reclassifies utility templates that contain promotional lines as Marketing, which costs more per message — keep EMI and KYC templates strictly factual and put offers in separate templates.

For statements and sanction letters, use a document header and password-protect the PDF with a known pattern (like PAN + DOB); say so in the body to cut 'can't open file' support calls.

Send EMI reminders 3 days before the due date, not on the day — auto-debit bounces are usually a balance problem, and the earlier nudge gives customers time to fund the account.

Frequently asked questions

Are OTP and transaction alerts allowed on WhatsApp for banks?

Yes. Meta has a dedicated Authentication category for OTPs and a Utility category for account and transaction notifications. Both require an approved template and user opt-in, and Authentication templates must follow Meta's fixed OTP format with a copy-code or one-tap button.

Can we send loan or credit card offers over WhatsApp?

You can, as Marketing templates sent to opted-in customers. Every marketing message must carry a clear opt-out, and you should avoid promising specific interest rates or returns in template copy — keep rate details on your website or in the sanction letter. Frequency capping by Meta also applies, so space campaigns out.

How do we handle RBI and data-privacy concerns with account details?

Mask sensitive identifiers in template copy — last 4 digits of account or card numbers, never full numbers or balances unless the customer requested them. WhatsApp Business API traffic is encrypted in transit, and InfiQ stores message logs in India. Your compliance team can review every template before submission since all copy is pre-approved by Meta anyway.

Do EMI reminders on WhatsApp actually reduce bounces?

Lenders typically see materially fewer auto-debit failures when a reminder lands 2-3 days before the due date, because most bounces are low-balance issues rather than intent issues. WhatsApp's read rates are far higher than SMS, and a 'Pay now' button removes the friction of finding the payment link. Start with the 3-day reminder and add the day-before nudge only for accounts with a bounce history.
