Thrippunithura Municipality lies in Ernakulam district, east of Kochi city, and covers about 29.17 sq km in 53 wards.[1]
The town was the capital of the former Kingdom of Cochin, and descendants of the Cochin royal family still live here.[3]
The Hill Palace was built in 1865 by the Maharaja of Cochin; the royal family handed it to the Government of Kerala in 1980, the Archaeological Department took it over in 1986, and its museum of 11 galleries opened in 1991.[2]
The palace complex has 49 buildings on 54 acres, with a heritage museum, a deer park, a prehistoric park, a children's park and many medicinal plants.[2]
The district puts it about 12 km from Ernakulam, about 2 km from Tripunithura railway station and about 32 km from Nedumbassery airport.[2]
The Sree Poornathrayeesa temple holds its annual Vrischikolsavam, and the town's Athachamayam procession is one of Onam's recognised events.[3]
Tripunithura is a centre for classical arts, Kathakali among them, and is home to the RLV College of Music and Fine Arts and a Government Ayurveda College.[3]
Its railway station is on the Ernakulam–Kottayam route, and Thrippunithura metro station has operated since 6 March 2024.[3]
