The princely state began in 1830, when a Bairagi Vaishnav mahant moved his capital to Rajnandgaon, then called Nandgram; in 1865 the British recognised Mahant Ghasidas as its ruler.[2]
The state merged into Durg district in 1948; Rajnandgaon became a district of its own on 26 January 1973, and in 1998 part of it joined part of Bilaspur to form Kabirdham.[2],[1]
The district now lists 7 tehsils, 4 development blocks, 408 gram panchayats and 697 villages.[1]
Gajanan Madhav Muktibodh, Padumlal Punnalal Bakhshi and Baldev Prasad Mishra are the writers the district names as its own.[1]
Agriculture employs most of the workforce: rice, jowar, bajra and pulses, with paddy grown in the kharif season, and dairy, poultry and fisheries beside them.[3]
Tribal communities collect tamarind, amla, mahua, mango, sitaphal and medicinal leaves for herbal industries, and the region yields tendu leaves and sal seeds.[3]
Its industries include agro-based, cotton textile, jute, wood, paper and chemical units, and limestone deposits support mining.[3]
Chhattisgarh's exports were worth Rs 16,510 crore in FY26, led by rice, engineering goods, electronic goods and spices.[4]
